The 12th SDAFF Spring Showcase presented by Pacific Arts Movement took place from Thursday, April 20, through Thursday, April 27, 2023 at the UltraStar Cinemas in Hazard Center/Mission Valley.
Over 15 films from Asia and beyond were presented during the 8-day film fest that featured several North American and West Coast premieres as well as four classic films starring iconic Hong Kong stars Anita Mui and Leslie Cheung.
“We’re thrilled to present the 12th annual Spring Showcase, a testament to the rich diversity of Asian and Pacific Islander storytelling,” said Alex Villafuerte, the organization's new Executive Director.
Spring Showcase was Villafuerte's first show at the helm before going all-in in preparation for the San Diego Asian Film Festival, Pac Arts' flagship event that takes place annually in late Fall, and the organization's 25th anniversary in 2024.
“As we unveil this year’s lineup, we invite our community to join us in celebrating our storytellers that unite us through film,” said Villafuerte.
"It’s Spring, and we’ve come to play," said Brian Hu, Pac Arts' Artistic Director, in his welcome on the event's website. "The Spring Showcase is SDAFF’s colorful alter ego, full of characters who dream up more playful versions of themselves."
From J-horror, to kickass sari-adorned action stars, to the adventures of a K-drama-loving ajoomma, here are the five movies we were most excited to watch.
Full disclosure: Since covering SDAFF Spring Showcase 2022 as media, I've joined Pacific Arts Movement as their festival volunteer coordinator.
