DOWNLOAD: ACTIVITY SHEETS
Hello Barkada activity sheets are free downloadable resources. Printing isn't necessary. They can be written and colored on in free PDF editing applications; Google "free PDF editor" for options.
By spotlighting artists with intersectional identities, these activities are also intended to validate, start conversations, and build community. Please share them with family, friends, teachers, librarians, before- and after-school program coordinators, and others.
If you've completed or distributed any of our activities, please post a photo on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook and tag @HelloBarkada #HelloBarkada so we can reshare and see them in the wild!
COLORING PAGE • Collectively: Beat the Heat
September is sweltering, from the humidity to the temperatures. Catch some suggestive cool with our latest coloring sheet, featuring an illustration of the Korean dessert melon bingsoo (aka bingsu). BONUS: A miniature version of this illustration appears with eight other illustrated cold and frozen treats in our Collectively Special Edition Dots & Boxes Pocket zine that's available for purchase from the Hello Barkada table at the San Diego Zine Fest on Sunday, September 18, from noon–6:00 p.m. PT! The Dots & Boxes Pocket zine features three themed game grids with illustrations by Christine Pasalo Norland, and opens up into a fourth game grid that you can add your own illustrations to or play as is (i.e., classic Dots & Boxes). The San Diego Zine Fest is free to attend, so please come through in support of Hello Barkada!
DOTS & BOXES • Fil Am History Month
It's been 30 years since the Filipino American National History Society (FANHS) first introduced October as Filipino American History month. Rally 1–3 friends and celebrate the impact of Fil Am creators in the visual arts, performance arts, literature, and comics arts with this free Dots & Boxes game sheet, first published last year. Featuring writer Jessica Hagedorn, illustrator and comics artist Mike Curato, painter Pacita Abad, educator and poet Rachelle Cruz, and 13 more Filipina/o/x and FilAm artists, writers, and creatives.
WORD SEARCH • Of Crows, Song, & Sky
We're taking to the open waters of the Crescent Sea in this word search featuring characters, places, clans, and slang from Black Sun (Saga Press/Simon & Schuster), the first book in the Between Earth and Sky series by bestselling and award-winning speculative fiction writer Rebecca Roanhorse.
Black Sun has everything: a prophecy, political intrigue, flawed underdogs, women in revered leadership roles, central characters who are LGBTQ+ or disabled, gothic romance, mysticism, transfiguration, and horror. If you haven't already read it, consider this a sign to add it and its follow-up Fevered Star to your TBR pile so that you're caught up by August 1, 2023, when the third of the trilogy The Mirrored Heavens is released. Not yet convinced? The dust jacket for Black Sun includes a pull quote from LeVar Burton in which he says of Roanhorse, "I'm really happy to have a voice like hers on the planet." In the Reading Rainbow, we trust.
